Debate Win for GMS’s Sixth Form

Congratulations to GMS’s Sixth Form debaters, who were overall winners in a recent interschool event. We thank Joseph Legerton for writing about the event for the website.

‘I was recently forwarded an email from Wycombe High asking if Great Marlow School would be interested in participating in an interschool debate competition along with Holmers Green, Royal Crest Academy and, of course, Wycombe High.

After some correspondence with Wycombe High, we decided on the debates we would participate in and when we should apply.

The Great Marlow team consisted of me (Joseph Legerton), Isaac Grotrupp and Daniil Petrov. We had a few days, before the debate, to prepare, so we met as a team to discuss our strategy and what points we would like to focus on.

When we arrived at Wycombe High, we were invited into a small briefing beforehand.

We lost our first debate due to being a bit too nervous and not being able to properly promote our views. We had a group discussion afterwards: we decided to be more on the ball, say things with more confidence and be less reliant on the notes we had created. This turned out to be a very successful strategy and led to our victory in the two next debates.

The final was against Holmer Green, who were a very formidable opponent and kept us on our toes throughout the final, which took place in the main hall.

In the end, we were decided the winner and presented with the award. Daniil also won a separate award for the best preprepared facts.

We are all very grateful for the opportunity Wycombe High provided us with; it was fun to be able to meet with many great people through this experience.’
