Effective Climate Change: a Student’s View.

Marlow Energy Group, Writing Competition: ‘What do you think are the most effective ways of reducing the impact of climate change?’

Within our generation, there are great concerns for the community to reduce the impact of climate change. However, I believe that when taking action, we first have to reflect on our choices. There are personal changes we are able to make, that individually lessen our own negative impacts on climate change.

We focus on the bigger picture, acting together, but with the measuring of carbon footprint, recently introduced in order to evaluate our own part to play in the demise of our climate, we are presented with the concept that each person is accountable for their contributions of green house gases, further reasoning our need for difference. This can encourage us, as individuals, to adopt more sustainable lifestyles and help us to make environmentally conscious choices. This is within our capability by envisioning what we can do, instead of what ‘isn’t possible’.

Simple and positive changes we can make, focusing on reducing, conserving and fundamentally switching habits and behaviours. By using our voices through action, as individuals, we can lead to change on a much grander scale.

Many are off put due to the responsibility large companies hold in our worsening global situation. With 70% of carbon dioxide emitted from only 100 companies worldwide, we can feel defeated due to the fact that our own efforts cannot single handedly solve the imminent climate crisis. Nevertheless, our personal choices do have an impact, and despite being on a smaller scale, when we as individuals collectively adopt environmental practices, we can influence larger powers through a ‘ripple’ effect thus promoting policy changes.

After all, reducing the impact of climate change is not only about prevention, but also influence. We can make our voices heard by those in power, like our local MPS and members of government. By voicing our concerns about effects of climate change, we can help bring about positive impact. As quoted by Al Gore ‘Use your voice, use your vote, use your choice.’

I believe reducing the effects of climate change can be made through a combination of awareness and self demonstration. It is vital that we lead through example, paving the way for others to follow. Small changes: conserving energy, reducing meat intake, choosing more eco-friendly transport options, choices that not only benefit our lifestyle but, furthermore, the planet. We can’t rely on big businesses to start what we are already capable of.

In order to make a difference you have to ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’. Because I think that the most effective way of reducing the impact of climate change is by changing our personal choices and actions. Change is the thing that we need to see, so change is the thing we have to be.
