20 Hrs-24 Mins Cycle Success 2024

GMS’s Sporting Challenge was supported by a Year 7 parent, who attempted and succeeded in cycling for all 20 hours and 24 minutes.

This year’s Sporting Challenge hit the headlines when a Year 7 Parent, Roger Berry, went all out to cycle, in the Redgrave Sports Centre (RSC) Fitness Suite, on a Watt Bike for the entire 20 hours and 24 minutes of the challenge. He began at 4.00 pm on Thursday 2nd May, and finished at 12.24 pm on Friday 3rd May.

Roger has lived in Marlow for the past 14 years and lives with his 3 children, dog, and a very understanding wife.  He is a keen triathlete and has competed in Ironman events including the Ironman UK and Ironman Wales, as well as several other endurance events raising money for charitable causes whenever possible.

Roger says, “The communication on the GMS 2024 Sporting Challenge sparked my thinking into whether I could cycle for the entire time and there was only one way to find out”.  Roger added, “My son, in Year 7, has really enjoyed the early rowing programme. This is a fantastic cause and will benefit the whole Marlow community for many generations to come”.

In terms of cycling Roger has already completed a very impressive challenge during which he (and a group of friends) cycled from Marlow to Pembrokeshire, a very hilly 345 kilometres, in one day!  So he is very hopeful that he has the endurance in his legs to complete the challenge.  This year Roger is also in training for two more challenges the Tour de Etape mountain stage from Nice, France, and a 17.5km swim of Lake Windermere.

Roger was supported in the challenge by friends and family as well as the GMS staff and other community participants exercising in the RSC throughout the challenge.
