Eco Warriors – Lisa Schafer

Sixth Former, Lisa Schafer, writes about the Eco-Warrior Club at Great Marlow School and her involvement in its growth.

“The Eco Warrior Club is place for students to do their part for the environment. We are dedicated to achieving an “Eco-Schools Green Flag” which is awarded by the Eco-Schools organisation and is an excellent way to display our hard work during the academic year.

As the first term and 2021 comes to a close, as a student I would like to revisit what the club has been like in its first few months. As the club grew in members, various roles and projects were established.

One of the first ‘making projects’ was to build small beehives and place them around the school, ready to house some bees when spring arrives!

Another ‘making project’ involved upcycling unused canvas bags from the textiles department. We printed various patterns onto these bags with stamps and fabric paint; there are plans to sell them for fundraising.

One main project that has been very active is gardening, the students volunteering for gardening have been very helpful in planting daffodils in old tyres; various flowers; and even hedges around the school. Trees have been planted next to D block – this, in particular, will help the future generations of GMS to have a cleaner atmosphere and provide a habitat for more wildlife!

Another ongoing project is to help GMS recycle more, it recently became clear that few students understood which waste went into each bin, so we are going to educate them, to prevent most of our waste from going to landfills! If we start as soon as possible, then it will become a habit and be easier for future generations to learn as they enter GMS.

Quite a bit has happened so far, but we need all the help we can get if we want the Green Flag. All who wish to be involved, please sign up.”
