Wheelchair Basketball

The PE Department at Great Marlow School endeavour to ensure that PE lessons and sporting activities are inclusive to and enjoyed by all.

One of the Year 7 classes has been participating in basketball lessons this half term. To give the students a different perspective and to further challenge their developing basketball skills, Aces Wheelchair Basketball Club, based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, kindly allowed us to use their sport wheelchairs for a couple of sessions of wheelchair basketball.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience a new sport, which is enjoyed by over 100,000 people worldwide and has been included in the Paralympic Games since 1960.

The students were taught by a qualified coach and once they had mastered moving and steering the wheelchairs, they practised passing and dribbling skills. By the end of the session, the Year 7s were taking part in 5 a side games and thoroughly enjoying their introduction to wheelchair basketball.
