Book Club Blossoms

Imagine the scene. The sun is shining, exam revision is in full swing, but all you want to do is sit in the sunshine and read a good book. Sound familiar? It definitely did to some of the dedicated AS level and GCSE English Literature students who took on the challenge of joining the GMS Book Club run by the English Department. The aim of club has been to allow students to read texts that they may not have had a chance to otherwise and discuss them with their peers (accompanied by cake of course). We wanted to challenge the students’ reading comfort zones and broaden the type of literature they read away from the exam syllabus.

The club is now onto its second text (One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and the popularity is continually increasing with more and more students gaining the confidence to share their opinions and enjoying the opportunity to discuss the texts. With the students strongly condemning The Great Gatsby, we are really interested to hear what the opinion on this text will be!  If anyone feels like joining in, then please come to see Miss Morbey in E3 to find out the next text and meeting time.
