Hockey at the Wembley SEE Arena

Miss Haynes and Mrs Braybrooke took 16 GMS students to the Maxi 5 Indoor Hockey Championship Finals Day at Wembley SEE Arena at the end of January.

In the first game of the day, Reading men’s team lost to the East Grinstead men’s team. Next, came a close game played by Canterbury men vs Sevenoaks men that saw Canterbury win 6-5 and progress to the final later in the day.

During the day, pupils were given the opportunity to meet members of the teams to have their photographs taken and collect autographs.

In the afternoon the GMS visitors enjoyed watching Bowdon Hightown Ladies take on East Grinstead Ladies in the final of the Women’s Indoor Championship. The game started slowly, but after the first two quarters it picked up. The top goal scorer of the tournament scored an incredible individual goal, much to the excitement of her biggest fan Florence Braybrooke. Sally Walton, the top goal scorer, went onto score a penalty flick to lead her team to victory.

The last game of the day was East Grinstead men against Canterbury men. One member of the East Grinstead team is the Great Marlow boys’ hockey coach, Andy Bull. East Grinstead ran away with the game in the first quarter: in fact the game looked to be finished by half time, but Canterbury made a fantastic come back. Player of the Tournament, Kwan Browne, made a big impact. The game was close, right up until the final whistle. In the end East Grinstead won. Andy Bull took the trophy home at the end of the day.

The girls were fantastically well behaved and were a credit to the school. They took home many great memories as well as an interest in playing indoor hockey!
