Science Club for Primary Pupils

A special Science Club brought to spring term to a close at GMS, with a BANG.

The students of GMS Science Club offered a unique opportunity for a selection of Year 2 pupils from Marlow Church of England School to be present at their club. The young children arrived at the lab with excitement and intrigue.

The teachers informed the Year 2 students how the colours of fireworks can be explained scientifically. Different chemical compounds were held over a lit Bunsen burner, which showed how colour is generated using a chemical reaction. The pupils recorded the results before having a go themselves!

Next, the pupils were given a ‘hair-raising’ experience: in showing how static electricity works their hair literally stood on end. GMS praise the selection of very brave Year 2 scientists who volunteered to have a go on the Van de Graaf machine.

To end the session the Year 2’s teacher, Mrs Guinness, used the charge generated by the Van de Graaf (and her body) to light a Bunsen burner with her finger!

Great Marlow School would like to thank the Year 2 students for their great enthusiasm and impeccable behaviour while visiting the Science Department, and the staff of Marlow Church of England School for facilitating this excellent occasion.

The science team would also like to extend a huge thank you to Kiya Martin and Abi Judkins (Year 8 students) for their loyalty to science club and their assistance in the session. Well done girls!

GMS wishes to thank the staff of the Science Department who have given of their time to facilitate the Science Club. which has turned out to be hugely successful.
