Bucks New University PE Taster Day Trip

Report from Sixth Former Jasmine KIsbee.

On Tuesday 2nd July, a group of A-level and BTEC PE sixth form students were invited to Bucks New University, for a course taster day. The day began with us being split into groups and taking part in a number of different sessions.

My group started with sports injuries in the sports therapy clinic, where we were shown how to tape a sprained ankle. This was the favourite session for many of us, despite the reluctance to remove our shoes and socks.

Next, we moved to the sports sociology session, where we focused on critical thinking. The important debate about performance enhancing drugs (which is heavily discussed in the A-level PE course) was discussed in detail.

After we’d filled up on food from the buffet, we all moved again, this time my group went to the human performance laboratory, where we were shown round. The talk that accompanied the tour covered  strength and conditioning and biomechanics. We were shown how the high tech and up to date equipment is used in the university and in professional sport.

Moving onto sports psychology gave the opportunity to  test our communication, concentration, teamwork, and leadership skills though engaging in various activities.

Finally, to end our trip, we were given a tour of the campus, we were shown the sports facilities, the music studios and the flight simulator. This was a very hands-on and informative trip which, I am sure, has helped the students decide what type of course they will apply for in the coming months.

GMS thanks Bucks University for offering such an informative introduction to further education.
