Yr 10 Geography Field Trips

The Field Trip to Swanage.

On Friday 28th June, enthusiastic Year 10 GCSE geographers arrived at the Redgrave Sports Centre for a 7 am departure to Swanage. On arrival, working in small groups, the first fieldwork method carried out was a beach profile and sediment classification to identify the various coastal processes at work at Swanage beach.

After this, there was a walk along the beachfront and up through the hills for some lunch on Ballard Down, which overlooked Swanage beach and Studland. Poole harbour and Bournemouth beach could be seen in the distance! The students drew a quick field sketch of the surroundings at lunch before continuing along the coastal path to the view of the Old Harry Rocks, at the eastern side of the Jurassic Coast. The weather and landscape were incredible. Everyone felt very lucky to explore the coastline in such great conditions!

Finally, was the walk down to Knoll Beach, where students enjoyed some free time and had the chance to buy an ice cream, or fish and chips! Just after 4 pm everyone boarded the coaches: arrival back was before 8 pm. A thoroughly fantastic but tiring day out in Swanage!

The Field Trip to Oxford.

On Wednesday 26th June, Year 10 geographers visited the city of Oxford for a field trip. On arrival at 10.30 am, students carried out Environmental Quality Assessments, land use surveys and field sketches at four sites in Oxford city centre. Students walked to Westgate shopping centre, Oxford castle, Radcliffe Camera and the Carfax Tower. The data collected will enable students to assess how far Oxford has successfully redeveloped.

Fortunately, the weather remained dry and the students really enjoyed walking around the city centre. Everyone met up for lunch in the stunning scenery of Christ Church meadow, which overlooked the impressive Christ Church College. After lunch, students worked on producing a creative piece of work in small groups, to represent urban trends and redevelopment in Oxford city centre

The coach collected us at 2 pm and we arrived back to school just in time for the 3 pm bell.
