GMS’s U13 Girl’s Hockey

On Tuesday 13th January 2015, GMS’s U13 girl’s hockey team went to Dr. Challoner’s Grammar School for a hockey game. There were so many able and willing girls ready to participate that GMS took two teams.

Sadly, the great British weather took its toil on the outdoor pitch, which was flooded, but this did not stop the teams from playing:  the sports hall was converted to accommodate the games in an indoor setting.

The GMS team had never played an indoor match before. The A team were the first to play. The game started slowly, as the players were not used to playing indoors. However, it was not long before Issi H and Molly engaged in great passing.

Dr Challoner’s team did not challenge GMS at all in the first minutes, but crept through with a sneaky pass to an unmarked man on the back post. At 1-0, Great Marlow was down.

With the support of Hills, who has just turned 18, and all the girls on the side-line, the spirit of the team lifted. Molly hit a perfect pass to Helen, who skilfully shot the ball into the back of the net, with a bang.

At half time both teams were on edge. The score at 1-1, meant the final outcome was anyone’s guess. Great Marlow came to the second-half fighting to win. There was more than one close call, but Smyth was there to stop the opponent’s securing a goal with her football feet. The game turned in Great Marlow’s favour when Rachel took an opportunity to pass the ball to Flo, who passed it to Helen, who dribbled it through the defence to a place where she could aim for the back of the net. At the end of the game everyone was thrilled that Great Marlow U13 As had won their first game. GMS congratulates all the girls and Miss Haynes who trains them and organises fixtures.
