European Day of Languages 26th September

Did you know there are over 6000 languages spoken in the world, and behind each and every one of them lies a rich and diverse culture? Well there is, and that’s what the European Day of Languages aims to celebrate – by showing people across Europe how important languages are, and the fun that can be had learning them.

Pupils in GMS will be taking part in a language quiz during form time this week to celebrate the day.

If you think that English is the only language you will ever need, consider the following:

•       There are 4000-6000 languages in the world.

•       There are more than 300 languages spoken in the UK.

•       Chinese (Mandarin) is spoken by most people as their first language.

•       English is spoken by most people as their second language.

Remember:

Not everyone speaks English.

Learning another language helps us to understand English.

If you want to persuade someone or influence them, it is best to speak their language.

It is personally rewarding and broadens your mind and your opportunities.
