Skai: A Weekend with a Virtual Baby

Zakilya Samuel-John shares her experience of taking a virtual baby home for the weekend.

On Friday 9th March, I received a virtual baby and I named her Skai. she cried when I went home so I tried changing her nappy and feeding her but it didn’t work. She was being fussy so I started rocking her and that worked.There were some difficulties with one of the IDs, (the program that controls the baby), because it didn’t work I had to change to one that did work. I had some help from my older sister, when I couldn’t look after Skai, just like a real child, it had to be cared for at all times.

When it was 6pm we went to pick up my sister from work. Overnight, Skai cried so much, but she didn’t wake me up from my sleep.

On Saturday, we were going to my nanna and poppy’s house to see my uncle. On the car journey, Skai was sleeping and made several cooing noises in her sleep. During the day Skai cried many times, so I asked my sister, Shaohlin, to help as she had done this before. The baby cried a lot when needing to be fed. My youngest sister always wanted to be around Skai; she really enjoyed having her around.

On Sunday, the baby turned off and I was worried; I wondered if I had done something to upset the program. I turned her upside down (like we saw the lady do in the video, to check the baby still works), this told me that Skai was quiet but sleeping.

I really enjoyed having Skai, it was such a fun experience – I really want to do it again!
