Wallingford Fours and Eights Head 2022

Rowing continues for our GMSBC rowers despite the weather. Mr Murison writes about the latest outing.

‘Despite the heavy rain and high river levels, the Wallingford Head went ahead on Sunday morning, 27th November. We took a J18 VIII and a J16 VIII.

Our top Eight, sadly, was not in the best form due to the squad struggling with various winter ailments, meaning they had not trained as an Eight squad this term, so while excited to see how they fared, everyone had realistic expectations. The target was to be among the top 10 finishers. It was a strong field and the crew came in eighth out of the 20-plus competing school crews, which was pleasing.

In the race, Hampton School was immediately ahead and should have moved out of the way for the GMS boat, unfortunately, they did not. The very fast stream made overtaking difficult and challenging because moving out slowed the boat down, which is why the rules say the Hampton crew should have conceded the racing line.

This was a promising result for a fairly young crew with Rafael Quinn at Stroke and only 2 Year 13s  on board. Other schools ho found conditions challenging were from Eton, St Pauls, Westminster, Hampton, Latimer Upper, St Edwards among others.

Sadly, the afternoon race was cancelled as conditions proved too dangerous, so our J16 Eight  did not get a chance to test themselves.’

Well done to all our GMSBC crews and Mr Murison for commitment to the sport and going out whatever the weather.
