Ypres History Trip 2014

On the 12th September the History Department took history enthusiasts to the First World War battlefields. The day was intense.

An excited, blurry-eyed group of pupils gathered to board coaches for an early morning departure, at 4.55am. It began the long day, which ended at 11.30 pm. Leaving so early ensured avoiding the worst of the heavy traffic on the M25. It was important to catch an early Euro-tunnel train.

The pupils, as shown by the write-ups attached, had an emotional and memorial experience at the site of the war graves; in the museums; at Menin Gate; and in the trenches. The whole experience brought history alive for all involved.

The behaviour of the pupils was exemplary, showing their great respect for the fallen soldiers of the war.

A more light-hearted time was spent in the town of Ypres itself, especially in the chocolate shop, and on the boat back to Dover.

It was a memorable day for all involved. Readers are invited to click on the attachments to read three accounts by the pupils: they give a deeper sense of what they experienced.
