GMS Summer Reads

“So many books, so little time” reading is wonderful, most especially when you find a ‘gem of a book’ that becomes truly memorable.

GMS promotes reading in so many ways: through the library; in the monthly ‘Drop Everything and Read’ initiative; in the E2 Wednesday KS3 Book Club; in the Sixth form Centre on Thursdays; through the GMS Literary Festival, which saw celebrity author Conn Iggulden visiting the school; and in departments, like Geography, who promote the love of reading on a display board, with the added geographical bonus of locating where in the world the story takes place; finally, through the GMS Reading Challenge.

Marlow Library recently featured our KS5 student book reviews. It has been an inspiring collaboration giving the people of Marlow a wonderfully eclectic selection to choose from.

Alongside reading is writing, that is writing for an audience of readers: GMS students have proved winners in writing as five have been announced as winners of the Marlow Flash Fiction Writing Competition; now, students are being challenged to write something for Drop Everything a Read: a short story of 500+ words to be read in form time. The story can be about anything that inspires, interests, or ignites the imagination. Entries to be submitted to: clegerton@gms.bucks.sch.uk by Friday 26th May.
