Girls U18 England Hockey Champions

There was no finer moment than hearing the final whistle at the Hockey Tournament at Lee Valley Hockey Centre – GMS’s U18s Girls’ Hockey Team had won the U18s Hockey competition: officially they became the best.

For all those present, Miss Porter and the other coaches, plus representatives of GMS students, the sound of celebration raised the roof with the sheer excitement of the moment. Our girls were the commanding side throughout, but as all sports people know, a game is not won until the final whistle, which officially marks the end of the match: the euphoria of the team in the stadium, on the trip home and in school is still tangible days later.

The girls’ confidence has grown exponentially, from being amazed and initially overwhelmed by their private/grammar school opponents, to being totally unphased, which is all thanks to the experience of competing from a young age against teams locally and nationally.

The Winning Team

The PE Department thank everyone for their unstinting support since this hockey team was formed 7 years ago. Without all the teachers giving permission for the girls to forgo lessons, every time they competed in county and regional tournaments over the years, they would not have had the experience of competing on a grander scale required for this tournament.
