Careers: Sports Analysis

The Mathematics Department in conjunction with the Computer Department hosted a careers’ meeting linking sports analysis and data to coaching.

Michael Cosma, the visiting speaker, spoke about the maths behind coaching and how data analysis can be used to link to individual and team performance on both a premier league and national/international level. He is a coach and video analyst for the Belgian Women’s Hockey Team and Dragon HC – one of the top men’s hockey teams in Belgium as part of his presentation he showed how coding and programming were used to target key areas.

An important element of the discussion was how to find pathways into these careers: ways in which to access them. The students found the information very useful. It is always beneficial to see how data is used in live contexts, and also to have a wider knowledge of sports’ careers that do not directly involve participating in the game on the field of play.
