Judo Success for GMS

On 2nd October, several students from Great Marlow School competed in the regional qualifiers for the British Schools Championships.

It was a successful weekend for all of our competitors.

Firstly, congratulations to Joshua Urie in 7K2 who gained a silver medal in the under 46kg category in the British minor category and Ralphy Weaver Poole, in 7K1, who won a silver medal in the under 42 kg class.

Their elder siblings Frankie Weaver Poole (13H1) and Caitlyn Urie (12H1) fought fantastically well and both won all of their bouts to win a gold medal.

Frankie managed to secure an ippon ( the ippon is the ultimate way to claim victory in a match and it is the highest score in judo) on one of the four opponents who he beat on his way to the under 81kg title. Frankie will be kept busy in the next few weeks as he will be competing in international events in France and Holland. Caitlyn submitted two of her opponents and threw two more on her way to a perfect winning streak to the title in her category.

In addition to the gold medal positions, Frankie and Caitlyn have gained entry into the British Schools competition in the spring term and have both been offered, and accepted, a place on the British Judo Diploma in Sporting Excellence at Bath University.

Well done to each of the competitors, we are really proud of your achievements and wish you every success in future competitions.
