Wood4Trees

Wood4 Trees has truly inspired our school. Mr Wilson writes, “Earlier on in the year, Year 7 students were joined by Neil Butler, Founder of the Wood4Trees organisation to discuss their ongoing challenge, which is to plant 1 million trees, to reverse the impact of climate change. The charity was founded in 2020 by Neil Butler after he was left inspired by David Attenborough’s film ‘A Life on Our Planet’. From this point on, Neil and his organisation have been involving local schools in the planting of trees alongside highlighting the importance of trees to the world in which we live.

On Tuesday 26th April, GMS students will be potting their own tree saplings in the company of Neil Butler and his team of volunteers.

The students will take responsibility for their tree; they will take the potted plant home and care for it for a whole year! The trees remain in the pots for the duration, they need only to be regularly watered and kept outside.

After a year, the trees will be planted locally to create our very own wood.

Students be potting their sapling trees on Tuesday 26th April. Although Neil Butler will provide some pots, due to an issue with delivery, he has requested, where possible, students bring a suitable pot at least 16cm in diameter. Keeping with our theme of the environment, if the pot can be a recycled pot from the garden, that’s even better.

Students will be provided details about the logistics on the morning of the Year 7 assembly, the first day back after the Easter break. GMS hopes this provides students with an opportunity to explore the impact of climate change as well as be creators of change.
