On Friday 18th March, The 1000 Miles Cycling Relay Challenge takes place; it’s the GMS Comic Relief challenge for 2020. Comic Relief is always a big day in the school’s calendar and this year PE is leading this new cycling challenge. The 1000 miles is mirroring the Tour De Suisse, which usually takes 9 days.
The aim of the day is to achieve the following.
- 12 student bikes will be peddled continuously around the field for 8 hours, or until we hit 1000 miles. One lap is 800m, so 2000 laps have to be cycled.
- Students are to work together to ensure a continuous relay.
Exciting progress so far is as follows.
- 250 students have signed up.
- There are 50 students per session.
- There are 12 teams per 50 (3-4 cyclists)
- Youth Sport Award students, who are running the event are pleased with the progress being made.
- Saddle Safari has serviced the bikes ahead of the event and GMS are hugely grateful to them.
Payment
- Parent Pay has given us a direct link for any donations/sponsorship raised for Red Nose Day

On the day.
- Bucks Free Press is covering the event.
- Students will know when they’ve geographically hit significant points of the tour.
- Students will be using maths, when counting down the mileage and looking at average speeds.
- A festive atmosphere will be achieved through up-beat music playing throughout.
- All students are invited back at 3 pm to help finish off the mileage required.
- 4 x staff bikes will be used throughout the day to help with the mileage.
After the event.
- Data will be used post-event by the Maths Department.
GMS thanks Mr Goodright and his team for organising this and for investing time and energy to ensure complete success.
Good luck to all our GMS participants.
