UCAS Discovery Day

Last week Great Marlow School Sixth Form students participated in a UCAS Discovery Day, as it is at this point in their studies that Year 12 students should be thinking seriously about which path they wish to choose upon leaving Great Marlow School.

Throughout the day, students participated in a mental health and well-being introduction from Dr Alex, UK Youth and Mental Health Ambassador, as well as live Q&A sessions with university tutors, current students and various companies offering apprenticeship routes. We fully recognise that many students are undecided on their future plans, so were pleased to see that the event provided extensive support for the decision-making process itself, along with information on applying for apprenticeships, the Armed Forces and GAP years.

All information, interviews and recorded live sessions are available on catch-up through the UCAS site for the next 30 days – UCAS Discovery Sign up

Following are some reviews of the experience of the day. We thank all the students who contributed.

“I found the UCAS website really helpful in the way that you could search up universities and their specific courses and requirements easily. The talks were useful because they covered a range of topics and reigned in on any specific questions asked by students in the chat. It must have been difficult to recreate such an important event online and I think that considering the circumstances, they did a good job.” Aila Hollows-Butwell

“UCAS discovery day was pretty good for me, I had the opportunity to look at a lot of different unis around the country and talk to some students at those unis … I felt it extremely beneficial as I managed to find a course with their help that I think is perfect for me! So all in all it was definitely useful!” Jamie Foster

“I found the UCAS search really helpful as you could search for the subjects you were looking for and easily see all of the UK unis that had that subject available, as well as being able to see the ratings of the unis and information about the courses.” Ella-Louise Eichenberger

“I found looking at possible future universities through the UCAS discovery website really helpful and gave me a wider group of options than I thought I had. I enjoyed having a set time to look more in depth at where I would like to go after the sixth form.” Talie Pankhurst

GMS hopes that the event will have prompted students to focus on their post-18 plans. We are currently planning a Next Steps day, run by the school and external speakers, which will aim to further assist students at this important stage in their education.
