Celebration of Success and Drama Production

Welcome Everyone. Welcome to our Virtual Celebration for Success. Today, Friday 17th July, GMS has replaced the annual Celebration for Success evening, which recognises the extraordinary achievements of the students this academic year, with videos doing the very same thing.

Sally Brooks, Chair of Governors speaks first, introducing herself before welcoming everyone watching to the celebration. Mr Ford, Headteacher follows: Celebration for Success is a highlight of the year, and being virtual does not make it any less so for the Head, teachers, students, parents and carers.  Celebration for Success recognises, praises and rewards students for their diligence, work ethic and successes. To achieve this Heads of Department can be viewed reading out the names of the winners and the citation, which articulates the reasons for the award. The prize-winning students have been nominated by staff across the school and are recognised not only for their academic achievement, but also for the way they are role models.

Mr Ross and his team of KS3 students have also filmed, edited and released a fabulous video. When the students returned to school at the end of the summer term. Please click on the recording below, and enjoy.

Key Stage 3 Drama and Media Production by Mr Ross.

One Parachute

It is at this time of year that the Drama Department put on a KS3 show, so I was determined that the talented actors we have in KS3 should perform something: thus ‘One Parachute’ was born – a Drama  Department,  virtual show. Mr Chapman stepped in with his media expertise and 12 students composed either a monologue or a duologue, based on their experience of Lockdown, or a piece from a published play. The rehearsals took place via Microsoft Teams and the filming took place on Friday July 10th.

As always, the students were excellent and despite the constraints of social distancing, we have produced a piece of work we are all incredibly proud of. All the students learnt their lines and were able to perform their work in one take; in fact, it was only me who needed several takes for the introduction.

On Wednesday 15th July, we were able to premiere the work to the parents and carers of the students involved. I was incredibly proud that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

For me there were two really important production outcomes: firstly, the students determination and their willingness to work hard; secondly, how the virus has not stopped the creativity of the arts, most especially at GMS.

The title is significant, it is about sharing and giving to each other, like the parachute game. I believe this pandemic has brought out the best in so many.

This video would not have been brought to life without the expertise of Mr Chapman. It was a tight turnaround, so a huge thank-you is sent to Mr Chapman who gave his weekend to edit so professionally.

The staff involved were: Mr Ross , Mrs Chenery , Mrs Sharp and Mr Chapman

  • Year 7: Liam Trainer, Alexander Eldridge
  • Year 8: Seth Dennis, George Spencer and Jess Rhodes
  • Year 9: Joe Cogan, Maya Whyte, Faye Simpson, Emz Spooner, Dylan Mallet, Bex Hayward and Mal Allick.

GMS are incredibly proud of the outcome and thank everyone involved for their hard work and enthusiasm.

Despite the extraordinary circumstances of this academic year, we are delighted technology allows us to have our Celebration for Success. We look forward to the next academic year when we know equal praise will fall to the next Celebration of Success students.
