One Can Trust Pop-Up

Being kind is the theme of Mental Health Awareness Week, so this act of kindness by one of our GMS students is timely for today’s website news.  Iris Duncan, a Year 7 student, organised a pop-up collection point for One Can in Oxford Road, Marlow, and with the help of amazing neighbours and friends, she collected 90 items in 4 days. Iris is delighted; One Can Trust is delighted; GMS is delighted.

One Can is a charity that offers food parcels to the local community who are struggling. It depends very much on kind donations from the community in places like supermarkets. A couple of times a year GMS collect for the charity, for it is a favourite with the school community.

Just at the moment the charity is struggling. The number of impoverished families has risen: the demand on the charity has tripled since lockdown began; they are now feeding 520 people each week. Sadly, donations in supermarkets have dropped, One Can is receiving more donations from volunteer ‘Street Heroes’ who ask their neighbours to put donations into a labelled box outside their house, the Street Hero then delivers the food to the warehouse in High Wycombe.

One Can Trust are asking for more volunteers. If the GMS community could collect in the way Iris has done, collectively we will be offering an act of kindness to people who need our support in lockdown.

To offer help please email Teresa Knight at One Can Trust teresajknight@talktalk.net saying you are GMS student or connected to the school and she will support you in how to collect and deliver the items to the charity.

As this scheme falls under the umbrella of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, certificates are provided to show you have worked in the community to benefit others.
