World Book Day: 5/3/20

World Book Day takes place on Thursday 5th March.

Research has found that children who participate in World Book Day activities are more engaged in reading, and books, than those who don’t, despite the idea that reading for pleasure is currently declining in the UK. As a result of students participating in World Book Day, the statistics are:

· nearly 3 in 5 felt that they read more books

· nearly half say they bought more books

· over 2 in 5 borrowed and shared more books

· a third read more with their parents, due to taking part in World Book Day, with half of those believing they subsequently read more independently (The National Literacy Trust’s Annual Literacy Survey, 2019)

· 1 in 4 pupils (25.2%) said that the book they ‘bought’ with their 2016 World Book Day book token was their first book of their own.

At Great Marlow School, we recognise the value in promoting a love of reading across all year groups and subject areas. As a result, we would value your support in helping to ensure that all students have a copy of either their current or favourite book on Thursday. At 12 noon, we will be taking part in Drop Everything and Read: an initiative where the whole school will stop what they are doing for 20 minutes and read.

Additionally, all students in Year 7 will be off timetable for one lesson in order to partake in a carousel of reading activities, which the English Department have carefully orchestrated.

Miss Bevan, and her team, would also like to take this opportunity to direct you to the Great Marlow School recommended reading lists. On the school website, go to Curriculum – Departments A-Z, English – Key Stage 3/4/5 – Reading List, where a wealth of age appropriate recommended reading can be found.

GMS thank the English Department for their work to make this day a memorable one for the students, and promote reading as an activity that changes lives.
