Wins & Gold Relays NJIRC

Rowing at the National Junior International Rowing Championships had the team relays grouped into a boys event and a girls event, so the Year 7s and Year 8s had to race against Year 9 crews With no classification between different crews, in the events, it was difficult to rank the younger crews. That is, with exception of the Year 8 girls. The top Year 8 Girls’ Four won their race, 15 seconds clear of second place and came 8th overall. Knowing most of the crews that beat them, Mr Murison can confidently say they were the fastest Year 8 crew.
The Year 8 B crew also did amazingly  well, coming 6th in their race and 36th overall out of 105 crews. This is extremely promising for the coming summer.
The hopes of the squad though rested on the Year 9 Girls’ Four. They went in the first race for girls sprint relay and had a storming start. Very quickly it was clear they racing against themselves, having established a commanding lead over the rest of the field. Their PB in training was 6:59, and they had set a target to beat this. Despite having only a 20 second lead at half way, they pushed on to smash their PB in a time of 6:52.7. They had to wait for 6 more races to find out if anyone would challenge their time. In the end they need not have worried , the silver medal time was 15 seconds slower. A very well deserved Gold  for Emily Downing, Christina Baxter, Peyton Nugent and Milly Hopkins.
