Inspirational Students Overcoming Hurdles

Overcoming hurdles is one strength GMS try to instil in their students, so this story about Sophie Cook is welcomed as an inspirational story.

Sophie was an elite gymnast training some 25 hours per week. She started at the age of 8 and competed at national level, both within her club and for her school. Sadly, age 12 she then sustained a pars fracture in her back, which meant no exercise for nine months. Her dreams were shattered.

Thankfully, physically she healed completely, but every time she returned to training at a high level, she ended up with other injuries, she was in and out of training all the time.

In the last six months, she had to face the fact that she had to give up her gymnastics dreams totally. Instead of turning inward, Sophie turned this into a positive: she now uses her skills to coach others. For a full six hours a week she coaches in the same club where she first started, aged 8. Initially her time was given on a voluntary basis, but now she combines volunteering with training to gain coaching qualifications, something which at 13 is an incredible feat.

For Sophie, these past few years have been difficult, but now she has come out the other side.

Well done Sophie! Keep up your brilliant work.

Many thanks to Mr Ross for this article.
