Author Sufiya Ahmed Visits GMS

On Monday 1st July the library is being visited by a published author, Sufiya Ahmed. The book she will be talking about is ‘ Secrets of a Henna Girl ‘ launched in 2012 on International Women’s Day.

Secrets of a Henna girl has won several awards and follows the trials of a young Muslim girl called Zeba Khan, aged sixteen , who travels to Pakistan for a holiday and finds a wedding being planned: hers. The story focuses on the emotional fall out within the family as Zeba rejects the idea of a forced marriage and plots her escape back to England.

The talk will also encompass a motivational passage about never giving up on your dreams and how hard work and determination can make them happen. Sufiya will also give a basic understanding of how Parliament operates and how her work there inspired the storyline in her book.

Five volunteers will be asked up on stage to demonstrate an Asian bride’s henna ceremony, volunteers will be chosen from students who have read the book. The author had a previous career as a parliamentary researcher for the Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP in the Houses of Parliament. After being employed for a number of years by Stephen Timms she became Communications Advisor to the Rt Hon Harriet Harman MP. The talk will give students exposure to a working author and someone with a first hand insight into the parliamentary process.

The visit is part of a programme of activities, by the library staff, to bring good books to the attention of students.
