Skiing Easter 2019

To give a taste of skiing at Easter to all those considering going on the Snowsports Trip 2020, here is a review of this year’s marvellous ski experience. On Saturday 6th April, 70 Great Marlow students set off for the Aosta Valley on the Snowsports trip. Two coaches departed school and set off for Dover and after a short ferry crossing arrived in Calais. The coaches next  travelled overnight along the French / Italian border before a breakfast stop, a couple of hours from resort. After travelling through the Mont Blanc tunnel, the students arrived at the hotel to drop off their bags before heading up to La Thuile for a ski fit. The students spent the rest of the afternoon unpacking and resting in preparation for the week of skiing or snowboarding ahead.

After an early alarm on the Monday morning, students had breakfast and were kitted up for skiing or snowboarding. Both coaches headed up to La Thuile where the students met their instructors. The beginner groups set about mastering the nursery snows, with the more advance groups heading up in the gondola to tackle the blue, red and black slopes the resort had to offer. Each day the groups stopped for hot lunches between 11:30 am and 12 noon to replenish fluids and enjoy the sunshine.

The weather and snow were fantastic the whole week long. All the skiers made progress and with over 85 runs to master there was plenty of challenges for all levels.  Groups also had the chance to ski down to the French Italian border and cross into La Rosierre. After 5 hours of ski lessons, all the different groups met at the gondola.

The après ski programme involved trips into the town, ice cream, disco, karaoke and pizza night.

On Friday 12th, in the evening, the instructors came to the hotel for an Awards Evening: prizes were given students, including skiers of the week and tour girl/ boy of the year, which was a lovely finishing touch.

On the final day of skiing, GMS students were on the slopes early because they had to return to the hotel earlier than other days to shower, pack and eat before the journey home. Our Interski representative,  Izzy, was fantastic throughout the week organising the logistics for our students, as were the instructors who commended the students for their enthusiasm and respect.

Mia in Year 10 said, “Overall the ski trip was really exciting, I learnt how to ski and really enjoyed the extra activities we did in the evening with our friends”.

Ryan in Year 9 said,“I had a lot of fun on the snowsports trip. I would really like to carry on skiing in the coming years and I would definitely recommend the trip to others”.

Taryn in Year 10 said, “The instructors were great and we had so much fun. I had never skied before and at the end I was tackling some very steep blacks.”
