Montessori Visit by Sixth Formers

On Wednesday 27th Feb, Mrs Seeley and Mrs Pendlebury took their Year 12 class to visit Sunshine Montessori Nursery in Wheeler End.  The visit was planned to support their studies for their Level 3 Childcare qualification.
The purpose of visit was to see the Montessori theory working in practice and to learn about the benefits of Forest School.
The owner, Virginia Roden, kindly spent over an hour with GMS students. She gave an informative tour of Forest School and particularly the preschool room. The Montessori resources are what makes this system very unique in its approach. It was an eye-opener for all to see how independent the children were: three boys (3 years old) independently fetched their own fruit snack, poured themselves cups of water and cleared up afterwards!
Virginia Roden was very passionate about her school and her knowledge of the Montessori system was extensive. It was wonderful for our sixth formers to see how much fun the children of Forest School had. For example, in the treehouse, on a stage, and in a mud kitchen. Children help to cook their lunch in the woods, and they are allowed to climb trees.
The whole visit resulted in the GMS staff and students feeling very inspired.
