Ice Skating

As a reward for attendance and good sportsmanship at the Thursday lunchtime Sports Club, 22 Key Stage 3 students were delighted to be selected to attend the end of term reward trip yesterday. The Sports Club members (all wearing Christmas jumpers!) were driven by minibus to ‘Windsor on Ice’ at Alexandra Gardens in Windsor.

The open-air venue was beautifully decorated, with festive decorations and lights, and to add to the cheery atmosphere, Christmas songs were playing throughout our visit. The students collected their ice skates, put them on and hobbled onto the open air ice rink.

Once on the ice, it soon became obvious that the students, and the accompanying GMS staff, displayed a vast spectrum of ability between them, varying from skimming gracefully onto the ice and skillfully weaving around the rink with elegance and finesse, to clinging on to the side of the rink until knuckles turned blue, squealing and slipping with their dignity long forgotten.

Our session lasted for an hour, and the skaters, both able and less able, enjoyed every moment. Everyone persevered in trying to master this difficult sport: some surprised themselves by letting go of the side and skating (displaying some interesting techniques!) around the perimeter of the rink.

Happy and exhausted, the students were all returned safely to school with a just a few bumps and bruises from their efforts on the ice.

GMS thank Miss H Murray and her team for organising this event for the benefit of the students.
