On Thursday 8th November Design & Technology took two teams to John Hampden Grammar school to partake in the annual Rotary Club Technology Tournament.
A total of 29 teams entered from schools all around the county. The competition challenged the students to grapple with a surprise task presented to them on arrival. It involved a whole day creating a working solution to the challenge and presenting a portfolio of evidence to show the development of their product.
The task this year was ‘Crane’. GMS students were placed in the intermediate category; they could only use the materials provided to design and construct an electrically operated crane, which had to be capable of travelling the length of a track, under a height restriction, to pick up an object and return it to the starting point.
Students worked tirelessly throughout the day and both teams produced fantastic solutions that worked remarkably well.
Although not a winner this year the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained confidence in their abilities; the standard of their work has improved from being in competition against the other schools in the area.
DT very much look forward to next year’s competition!
GMS congratulate all our participants and their teachers for supporting this enterprise: well done.
