Thames Valley Park Rowing

On Sunday, the GMS army descended on the quiet river side, just by Thames Valley Park, for this three lane 500m sprint regatta. This is an old style riverside regatta, where crews often have to go through three or four races to make the final and win a tankard.

The first race was one for our Year 9 Boys’ Quads and both crews arrived at 07:30 to rig their boats. The regatta have a Tier 1 and Tier 2: meaning our two quads were in separate events, each event having quarters, semis, and finals. Both crews made their respective finals, the A boat winning their semi by three feet.

By the end of the morning division, GMS had three crews in finals and the races came down one after the other. The Year 9 B Quad was first and rowed a storming race, but just missed the win coming in second of three in the final.

The A Quad, stormed down the course, and although pushed quite hard by opponents, it never seemed in doubt that they would win.

At this stage the commentator mentioned something to the effect that ‘yet another GMS crew was about to race’.

Finally, our Girls’ Eight had a good race, but couldn’t quite get their bows in front, so another second place.

In the afternoon, after many further races, we ended with three crews in finals. The Year 10 Girls’ Octo went one better than the Year 9 Boys’ in reaching the final. Their semi-final against Lady Eleanor Hollis was an amazing battle with LEH leading through the early part of the race and, only a concerted no holds barred, drive to the finish put the GMS bows level with LEH. The verdict took several minutes to be announced and parents, crews and coaches were all silent. “The result of race 153 semi-final of girls J15 Octuples is that Grea…..” The distance and time were lost in the huge cheer from the Great Marlow fans waiting the news. Offically, it was 1 foot.

Yet again there were back to back finals for Girls J15 Octo, Girls J16 Coxed Four, and Junior Girls’ Singles- ( Millie Watts). While all three crews had good races they all came second (of three) by short distances. In at least two of them the GMS teams were many lengths ahead of third place.

A superb weekend rowing for the GMSBC. Well done to all.
