Childcare Students visit Wycombe Hospital

On Tuesday 19th June, Year 12, Level 3, Childcare Students visited the Children’s Outpatients Ward at Wycombe Hospital, accompanied by Mrs Seeley and Mrs Pendlebury.
On arrival at the ward, the students were met by Play Specialist, Nicola Ruff.

To support their work on Children’s Health, the students learned about:

  • the (emotional) needs of an ill child
  • preparing a child for a planned stay in hospital
  • the role of play therapy in recovery
  • how to support a child with a chronic health condition through play
  • types of chronic health conditions that may affect children in an early years setting
  • the potential effects on the family of having an ill child

Next, the students had a tour of the ward and playroom.

Great Marlow student, Chloe Tanner, said, “It was eye-opening, it gave us a real insight into another career. I liked the idea of dogs visiting the ill children, this was called, ‘Pets as Therapy’. Also, we were given the chance to try out the numbing cream and freeze spray that children have before a cannula.”
