ENERGISE 2018

GMS are so incredibly proud of the Great Marlow students who performed at the Wycombe Swan. They presented a powerful piece of work entitled, ‘When Will We Ever Learn’ which looked at the futility of war.

The cast performed their piece twice: on Friday Evening and Saturday at a matinee, over the two shows 1000 people saw the show.

It was the highlight and fulfilment of two intense months of concentrated rehearsing. The transfer from Great Marlow Drama Studio to the Wycombe Swan Stage was a challenge because the cast only had half an hour to rehearse on the stage, despite this the actors completely nailed it in the first rehearsal, meaning they were confident and ready for the the big night.

The two performances were simply outstanding as the actors gave everything to bring the piece alive. Their stage positioning and lines were perfect every time!

Because of the challenging nature of the piece the students did not take a bow: they wanted the audience to think about the message. Never-the-less, the cast knew how much their talent was genuinely and seriously appreciated because they heard the loud applause of the audience from the wing. Parents and carers were particularly complimentary: a few had tears in their eyes. Many teachers from other schools praised the performance of GMS’s students. Many compliments were expressed by the general public. But what was even more amazing, was the back stage reaction, many were moved to tears by the accomplished performance.

GMS would like to thank the parents and carers of the cast members for transporting them to the theatre on time, especially on Saturday when the snow made travelling difficult particularly at Handy Cross roundabout, which was out of action.

The special comradeship that has developed among the cast is worth a special mention, due in part to them portraying a subject matter with such an emotional message. Mr Ross was certainly affected; he was asked if he was having another “hay fever moment” (a reference to his reaction to the tears he had at a Romeo and Juliet performance).

The incredible performance has showcased the enormous talent we have in the KS3 drama department. GMS thank Mrs Chenery, Mrs Jeremiah and Mr Ross for all their hard, dedicated work in rehearsals and on the days of performance, especially in the way they nurtured the cast to fulfil their potential and kept everyone calm. The camaraderie has led to another successful production by the Great Marlow School Drama Department.

Next, is Oliver. No doubt there will be a packed house on every night it is performed due to the commitment of dedicated staff and talented students to entertain in a professional way. We look forward to seeing you there.
