Schools Head of the River and National Sculling Head

On Monday 12th March and Tuesday 13th March GMSBC competed at two national events. Around 1000 crews from across the UK and Ireland raced. All crews were made up of either eight, or four rowers. Great Marlow had four crews racing on Monday and nine on Tuesday.

The Boys’ 1st Eight, the Girls’ 1st Four and the Year 10 Boys’ Four, all came third in their respective events at the Schools Head. Sadly, they only award Gold medals for this one. The girls result was particularly strong, coming only 13 seconds behind the winners Henley, who have been very dominant in this event for a number of years.

On Tuesday, our favourite number seemed to be five: fifth in J18 Quads, fifth in WJ17 Quads, fifth in WJ15 Octos. It wasn’t until nearly the last race of the day that GMS hit the medals table. The J14 (Year 9) Quad of Hugo Loretto, Alastair Smith, MacKensie Jameson, Aidan Kelly and cox Frankie Weaver-Poole won the bronze medal in very impressive style. This is the first time Great Marlow has won a medal at this event for a Year 9 crew, and given the depth of the squad in this year group, this looks exceptionally promising for the regatta season ahead.
