Annual Mini-Olympics

On Tuesday 6th March, Great Marlow School hosted the annual mini-olympics. The event has been running successfully for the last 5 years and was attended this year by Sir William Ramsey School, Cressex Community School, St Michael’s Catholic School and Chiltern Way Academy. Each school brought teams of 8 participants. The teams comprised of both able and less able-bodied Key Stage 3 students, all eager to represent their schools. The Great Marlow students involved were: Artie Hayward, Oliver Brownlie, Zack Leeper, Alisha Hassan and Blossom Martin from Year 7 and Ryan Coare, Ben Coles and Reuben Metcalfe from Year 8.

To start the event in style, one of our talented Year 8 students Elliot Kerley performed an energetic urban dance routine, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Following this entertaining opening ceremony, the teams completed a circuit of activities, including basketball shots, speed cup-stacking, hurdles and badminton keepy-uppy. Each team spent five minutes on each station gaining points for their team. They were helped and encouraged by a team of 20 year 10 Sports Leaders, who proved to be a credit to Great Marlow School with their inspiring and mature support of the younger students. The final event was a relay race; an opportunity for each school to achieve some extra points to add to their final score.

The closing ceremony started with an exciting and impressive gymnastic display, performed by the Year 8 girl’s gymnastic team. They kept the audience enthralled and entertained while the scores were being finalised.

Finally, Ella Beaumont, who played wheelchair basketball in the GB women’s squad and still plays in the premier division of the nation league, presented the teams with their certificates and medals. The winning team this year were Sir William Ramsey School. They were given the mini-olympic shield to engrave and display at their school until next year’s competition.

Our GMS team showed outstanding teamwork and sportsmanship. Well done to everyone involved.
