Textiles is Flourishing

The Textiles Department is flourishing. At this time of the year the sight of the Fashion Show, in the summer term, galvanises many GCSE and A-level students to reach for the sky. As each year goes by more adventurous costume designs are made for the models that walk down that catwalk.

The Textiles Department enjoys celebrating outstanding GCSE and A-level results with their students on Results’ Day in August, every year. Because the department has installed modern equipment and technology, including computerised embroidery machines and printing machines, students have achieved on or above their targets.

From Year 7 to A-level all students are taught to become informed textiles consumers; they are introduced to fibres, fabrics and their properties. From Year 7 reasons for choice are discussed and investigated. As students progress into Year 9 they are introduced to pattern developments from basic blocks/scratch to the importance of designing bespoke patterns; the importance of hand and machine sewing; and the importance of decorating products using their own ideas from research.

Miss Agbozo and her team offer many opportunities for extra curricular activities, which includes a wide range of educational visits; including a visit to Paris Disneyland and the Victoria and Albert Museums fashion exhibitions and workshops.

The textiles staff also run an after school textiles club for KS3 students called, ‘The GMS Sewing Bee’. It takes place every Tuesday from 3pm to 4.15pm in D4, with members making products that incorporate the use of sewing machines and decorative techniques. This year they are making two products: the blouses are being modelled at the fashion show in March.
