GMS Hosts Mini-Olympics and WINS

On Thursday 10th March, for the fourth year running, Great Marlow School hosted the annual mini-olympics.

Sir William Ramsey, Cressex, Princes Risborough, St Michael’s and Alfriston schools all attended the event, each school bringing a team of eight participants. The teams comprised of both able and less able-bodied Key Stage 3 students, all eager to represent their schools. The Great Marlow students involved were: Joel Langford from Year 9. Rory Ormiston-White and Fiona Pullman, both from Year 8. Will Farley, Natalie Beckett, Shelley Armstrong, Jack Leighton and Patrick O’Donovan (PJ) from Year 7.

The mini-olympic event started with a traditional opening ceremony, with an olympic torch being passed from team to team. The GMS cheerleading squad performed an impressive routine to entertain the audience before the competition began.

The participants completed a circuit, spending five minutes at each station: gaining points for their team. They were helped and encouraged by a team of 16 Year 10 Sports Leaders, who proved to be a credit to Great Marlow School with their inspiring and mature support of the younger students. The final event was a relay race; an opportunity for each school to achieve some extra points to add to their final score.

The closing ceremony started with an exciting and impressive gymnastic display, performed by Mr Goodright’s boys’ gymnastic team. They kept the audience enthralled and entertained while the scores were being finalised.

Finally, Sam Ward, a Great Britain and England senior international hockey player, hoping to represent Great Britain in this year’s Olympics in Rio, presented the teams with their certificates and medals. The winning team were given the mini-olympic shield to engrave and display at their school until next year’s competition.

The proud winners this year and mini-olympic champions are…… Great Marlow School! The team showed outstanding teamwork and sportsmanship. Well done to everyone involved.
