West Country Trials

For the second week running GMSBC headed down to the West Country to race in a time trial on the Gloucester canal. We took fifty rowers from Year 8 to Year 13 to compete; we won three events and came second in five others.

Our senior 8, somewhat depleted by illness won IM3 ( an adult event). The Year 10 girls won Novice Eights in the morning, over 1750m. That afternoons four of them, Millie Watts, Millie Turner, Mia Taylor and Auriane Jobaggy, raced over 4000m in the Year 11 category and won.

The Year 8 crews were different from previously giving the opportunity for all of the year group to race at least once. Both the boys and girls A crews came second against good opposition. For most of them this was the first time on the water in 2016, and given their inexperience rowed with good form throughout.

The Year 9 boys saw off any competition in their division very comfortably. As the event was run over two divisions they were just pipped into second place. This was a similar story for the Year 10 double of Zeke Anderson and Dan Beswick, who demolished the other doubles around them but were held up and eventually collided with a boys’ quad who they were trying to overtake and did not move over as they should have.

The Year 9 girls were badly down on numbers due to illness. On the day they were up against some tough opposition in the form of Heddington School, the top girls rowing school in the country. Their quad came fourth. However, when they split into doubles the A crew of Rebecca Galbraith and Jessie McAuley, came second.

A thoroughly enjoyable days racing.
