Girls are Hockey Winners

U14 Girls Football Team Beat Borlase U14 Girls at Marlow Sports Club on Tuesday 9th February. The U14 girls’ team captained by Molly Griffiths beat Borlase 2-0 on a cold, wet and windy Tuesday evening. The first half was very even, with chances for both sides to score. Many well fought battles occurred out in the middle of the pitch. Lottie Enderby and Katie Windsor never looked out of place despite both only joining GMS in September.

At half time the students were buoyed with confidence and knew this was a match they could win, their commitment and hard work showed in every area and in every position. Sophie Smyth kept out Borlase goals with excellent saves throughout the game: Sophie played so well the parents from the other team asked me who was playing in goal for us.

Helen Windsor made a fantastic run through the Borlase team and drove down the right hand side of the pitch, just as we have continually practiced in training. Helen set up a fantastic opportunity for Jessie McAuley who was in the right place at the right time but just could not finish. Helen also hit the post twice in the second half, which demonstrated the dedication to the team, as GMS spent most of the second half attacking. Flo Braybrooke made a number of superb tackles whilst playing strongly in defence, which then saw her distributing the ball out wide to Lucie Walker and Georgie Webb.

Issi Hansen won two short corners that nearly resulted in deadlock. Thankfully, half way through the second half  Helen Windsor scored our first goal after penetrating the D. Rachel Burlison and Maisie Rhymer both marked Borlase players out of the game with their touch tight marking and last ditch tackles.

There was a bit of pressure to soak up from Borlase, which the girls dealt with very well as a team. Our second goal came from Molly Griffiths with 1 minute left to play, a beautiful reverse strike, which was well deserved for all her efforts during the game.

Katie Windsor won most valuable player from Borlase, however, she could not have done so without a fantastic team effort from all the girls on a very cold evening.
