Year 12 Geography Fieldtrip to North Yorkshire

On the 20th March the Geography Department took Year 12 geographers to north Yorkshire for the weekend to observe coastline management and rebranding as part of their Unit 2 fieldwork exam. On their journey up they were even able to catch a glimpse of the partial eclipse!

Friday 20th March

Once we had arrived and settled in we headed out to the coast to look at sand dune succession and impacts from human activity. This involved the pupils learning, first hand, about the fieldwork methods used to collect data, including evaluating the methods and data collected, to prepare them for their exam.

Saturday 21st March

We set out early on Saturday morning to look at coastal management techniques along the Holderness coastline, which is one of the fastest growing coastlines in Europe. We travelled along the coastline completing SWOT analysis of the coastal defences at four key locations, and looking at the different approaches to coastal management, from hard engineering to ‘do nothing’. Over the course of the day the weather became much stormier, which allowed the pupils to fully appreciate the power of the weather and erosion, and in some cases see how successful these management techniques were. Some of the pupils, and braver teachers, even managed to catch mass movement and erosion at work.

Sunday 22nd March

On Sunday, with slightly better weather, we ventured to Bridlington to look at the techniques of rebranding that has been put into place, and evaluating their impact on Bridlington. This was to overall determine if rebranding was successful at encouraging tourists to this once thriving sea-side town. This involved a using a huge number of data collection techniques, and, once we returned to the centre, analysis and evaluation.

Monday 23rd March

On Monday morning, we travelled to Dalby forest to look at how rebranding had happened within a rural area, to increase the revenue from tourists. This involved surveying the visitor centre and surrounding area to see how they had targeted certain areas at different demographics and utilised many eco-friendly strategies to minimise their impact on their environment.

This fieldtrip has been successful in building the pupils confidence with the Unit 2 work and practicing their fieldwork data collection, presentation, analysis and evaluation techniques to prepare them for their up-coming exam.
