Super Science

The Science Department in GMS offered the pupils an exciting science experience just before Easter.

In assembly, year groups participated in a game called “Flinch”, which relied on pupils believing science would save them from being struck by a large ball swinging from a pendulum towards their face. The final participant in each assembly was a member of staff. To add tension, unbeknown to the staff member, a methane rocket was fired, which generated a huge bang. Needless-to-say, the crowd were amused and the member of staff shocked. It certainly made the occasion memorable.

Daily demonstrations were run in every KS3 science lesson and many KS4 lessons.  There were five demonstrations in all: Cannon Fire, Exploding Wax, Rainbow Fizz, Methane Bubbles and the Screaming Jelly Baby.

In addition, there was a whole school form quiz, which was accessible to all year groups from Year 7 to Year 13. The quiz was a collection of science based questions produced by the British Science Association for British Science Week. By the end of the week there were some close scores: the form winners have been announced and commended for their knowledge.

In addition, the Year 7 Science Club produced posters for another competition that focused on science in the local area.  GMS are delighted that the work of one pupil is being submitted for the senior category.

Science is important to our world. Being inquisitive and gaining knowledge is central to our understanding. It is great that now GMS pupils have a  heightened awareness of this fabulous subject.
