U13 Hockey League Fixture

On a spring-like evening in February, the Great Marlow U13 girls walked down to Marlow Sports Centre (MSC) with a slightly depleted squad to play Borlase in a league fixture.

The A team started off strongly because Helen Windsor, Captain of the A team, ensured both teams warmed up thoroughly. Georgie Webb and Issi Hansen both had early chances in the D, but just couldn’t capitalise on their possession in the first half of the game.

At half time the score stood at 2-0 to Borlase, which did not reflect the even competition of this game.

Molly Griffiths, as vice-captain, took the team straight out of the starting blocks in the second half with a fantastic drive down the right hand side of the pitch. From there she crossed a superb ball into the D to Isla Page who was in the right place, but a fantastic save from the Borlase keeper showed the girls they would have to work extra hard if they were to score that all important goal.

In the final 20 minutes the girls did dominate and shock Borlase with their team performance and high possession of the ball. Corinne Fisher had a storming game in defence alongside Helen Windsor. Sophie Smyth, in goal, demonstrated that her football skills were an asset when a penalty flick needed saving.

The game finished 2-0. Despite the final score, the A team were buzzing from a fantastic fight in a game where they should have come away with at least a point. The experience will stand them in good stead in the games to come, because they know they are much better than they first thought. They have gained confidence.

The B team were hit by injuries and illnesses resulting in Captain Maisie Rhymer having to organise a team of only 6 members. Jasmine Kisbee worked hard in goal during the first half by a Borlase team who were extremely well organised in the first 20 minutes.Charlotte Hills gave the B team a fighting half time talk, while Maisie reorganised the team.

In the second half, with only 20 minutes left to play, the score stood at 5-0 to Borlase. GMS refused to look or behave in a defeatist manner, however. A new formation and different positioning by the team members lead to them gaining possession. Josie Grover, who had stepped up from the U12 team to play for the Year 8s, created many chances for GMS to score. Anna Rigsby and Lucie Walker galvanised the defence with constant encouragement and excellent marking, whilst Louise Chandler ran up and down the pitch as she attacked and defended for a solid 20 minutes. The game finished 8-0 to Borlase, but once again the end score did not reflect the game where Borlase managed to convert their chances in a way that GMS were not fortunate enough to do so.

For both teams shooting is the next item to improve upon in training. All those involved with preparing the teams could not be prouder of them, for their performance on the pitch; their dedication to their fellow team players; and their pride in their school.

It is certainly onwards and upwards for the girls at Great Marlow School.
