Christmas Music Recital

Those who attended the Christmas music recital were in for a treat on 3rd December.

No fewer than 40 pupils, from all year groups, performed an eclectic mix of classical, popular and modern compilations to delight the assembled audience.

Two choirs sang: the junior choir, in the first half, gave a rendition of Rip Tide followed by Love Story. The senior choir sang Merry Little Christmas, followed by Feeling Good, giving the audience a reason to tap their feet in time.

The growing skills base of musicians in GMS was apparent in the performance by the different groups, who so played professionally. The brass trio opened the proceedings with Hark the Herald Angels; the flute group showed their talent when playing In the Bleak Midwinter and Ding Dong Merrily on High; the ukulele group entertained with Silent Night and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer; finally, the GMS band brought joy with their lively rendition of Sleigh Ride.

Both examination year groups participated: Year 10 GCSE Music pupils and Year 12 BTEC students.

The programme began in a traditional way with Hark the Herald Angels Sing, this created a festive Christmas atmosphere. The evening ended, after We Wish You a Merry Christmas, with a surprise song for the legendary Mr Nash. In this way the musicians said a personal goodbye to him, while recognising his unstinting dedication to the school.

The pupils were encouraged to give the performance of the term by the wonderfully supportive audience, who were engaged, entranced and at times amused by what they saw and heard.

GMS’s Music Department is very grateful for the generous donation of money given by those who came. The substantial sum of £200 will be used to buy more instruments.

Many thanks go to The Friends of Great Marlow for the refreshments they provided; to all the staff and pupils for their hard work; to Matt Case and Matt Wyborn for their technical expertise; and, of course, to the enthusiastic visitors, without whom the concert would not have been a success.
