Business Skills Trip to the NEC

Recently,  41 Year 10 Business students attended the Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC. The Skills Show, the nation’s largest skills and careers event, attracts almost 74,000 visitors over a period of three days. The show provides hands-on experiences that inspire young people to explore further education, skills and apprenticeships. The Skills Show is part of  Find a Future,  the organisation that brings together the nation’s flagship skills and careers experiences. The students had the opportunity to visit the hundreds of stands and exhibition spaces, which represent a huge range of employment sectors, careers and opportunities for further education. They were able to gain an insight into a very wide range of jobs.

Many opted to have a hands on experience by taking part in the ‘Have a Go’ activities. These ranged from broadcasting on the BBC, to having their hair professionally styled. Other activities included the 49 official stations offering the chance to try careers as varied as bricklaying, floristry, web design and media make up.

The information gathered during the day relates directly to the student’s controlled assessment module ‘Planning for Work’ in which students have to decide upon an area of employment, research this in depth; and then use this information to chose a potential career and job.
