London Theatre Production Impresses English Department

On Wednesday 17th September the English department took their new AS English Literature students to see ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde at the renowned Harold Pinter Theatre in London.

The play is currently being studied by the Year 12, so having the opportunity to see the play performed live has enhanced their understanding of not only the play but also the comic genre of ‘The Comedy of Manners’.

Students and staff enjoyed watching a new take on the play, which has the interesting structure of a play within a play. The very experienced actors, Nigel Havers as Algernon, Martin Jarvis as Jack, and Sian Phillips as Lady Bracknell, performed in a hyperbolic manner, emphasising the satirical nature of the script, and of course adding to the comic effect.

Everyone enjoyed the performance and staff are now looking forward to reading fabulous coursework based on the students’ experience.
