GMS Beat Cambridge in Summer Rowing Success

Great Marlow School rowers enjoy international success – and beat Cambridge University.

Following a successful summer term, a number of Great Marlow School Boat Club (GMSBC) rowers had considerable success over the summer holidays.

The day the holidays began, the Year 11 Girls Coxed Four: Emily Paul, Holly Hammond, Holly Barnes, Rianne Neal and Stephanie Lyons, went to Molesey Regatta. In the first round they were drawn to compete against Cambridge University and won. Not content with beating them convincingly in this race, the girls went on to meet a second Cambridge University Boat Club (CUBC) crew later in the day and beat them as well.

At the same regatta James Wheal and Dan Magnussen won Intermediate 3 Pairs (IM3), in convincing form.

Meanwhile, at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham, Sam Haynes won Gold as part of the selected England Coxed Four at the British Championships.

The following weekend the Home Countries Regatta was held in Cork. Sam Haynes rowed in the England Coxed Four and the Eight and won gold in both events.

Ross Honey and Dan Magnussen, the gold medal pair from National Schools Regatta, were selected to row in the England Men’s Lightweight Pair.

The final event of the summer, where GMSBC competed, was the Coupe de Jeunesse in Libourne, France; this is effectively the Junior European Championships. Graham Lyons was part of the Great Britain squad and came fourth in an exceptional race in the Eight. This is the first time a GMSBC rower has competed at this level.

Congratulations to all the GMSBC crews who participated and performed so very well.
