Life Drawing Report

In GMS the AS art class focused on drawing the human form; different drawing techniques were explored. Students learnt how to measure, observe and draw a human as a diagram.

In the summer term, the class had the opportunity to attend a real life drawing class.

In studio surroundings, the students studied the structure and physique of the human body. The objective was to comprehend the movement and appearance of the model by looking closely at the areas described as the ‘internal framework’. Close scrutiny of how different body parts linked and moved together led to a better understanding of how to present the human form.

Time was given to develop a core understanding of highlights, shadow and tone; thus enhancing the students understanding of the human body without the distraction of clothing.

The experience was very enlightening. Drawing the human body in various positions was an educational experience as well as rewarding: by the end of the session the students had a better perspective and overall understanding of the human anatomy.

The session allowed individuals to choose drawing styles that suited their personal preference. This could be expressive and free or detailed and tight, depending upon an individual student’s inclination and talent and what could be achieved in the time drawing periods of 5, 10 and 20-minutes.

School lessons rely on photographs that candidates have to re-create, however, these are all static forms. GMS students were given the marvellous opportunity to work with a real life model which offers a much greater understanding of movement, than a still object or photograph.

The whole valuable experience, of observing a living human, generated an enthusiasm for creating artwork of the human form in a totally new way.
