Winners at the National Indoor Hockey Finals

Winners. The Great Marlow School U16 girls have proved themselves to be an absolute credit to our school, Marlow Hockey Club and themselves for being members of the winning team at the National Indoor Hockey Finals.

Molly Griffiths, Flo Braybrooke, Helen Windsor and Katie Windsor were integral to securing the title, so they are all members of the best hockey team in the country!

This success was no mean feat to secure: 50 teams originally entered the competition, with only 10 teams reaching the final. Seven of those teams had National League players participating, effectively giving them an advantage. Many clubs had affiliations to private schools, who had experience in participating in national tournaments. None of this fazed the Marlow team.

Over the course of the weekend six “seriously high intensity” hockey games were played, each lasting 24 minutes. Just one game was narrowly lost by Marlow: (4-3) to Stourport in the group stages.

As the Marlow team qualified second in the group for the semi-finals, they were drawn to play Repton. This team were worthy competitors with an “outstanding hockey pedigree”. Yet, Marlow’s team won comfortably 3-0.

As Stourport won their semi-final, the championship final was a rematch of Marlow against the only team who had been victorious over them in the group stage. Two of the best teams of the competition were facing each other in a final battle for the winning trophy.

The game was nail-bitingly close, especially as the first goal went to the opposition.

All the GMS girls played a central part in creating the 2-1 win: the skill and expertise of Flo Braybrooke saved the game from becoming 2-0; Katie Windsor’s tenacity created a plethora of problems for the Stourport’s defence; Helen Windsor’s relentless will to win galvanised the team; and Molly Griffiths in a cool, calm and composed way brought the tactical game to fruition. An absolute determination and resolve to win turned the game from 1-0 down to the fantastic finishing score of 2-1 to Marlow.

The close collaboration of Marlow Hockey club and GMS has led to this prestigious title being in the hands of Marlow Hockey club.  Congratulations to all, GMS are so proud of you.
